The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn and perfect the basic skills necessary for working in a commercial kitchen such as:                                                                                                                                                                                                                  a. Knife skills                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        b. Menu planning                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  c. Food preparation techniques                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            d. Food Safety and kitchen cleanliness (including COVID regulations)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                e. Handling commercial kitchen equipment
  • Responsible for preparing & serving meals Monday – Friday to BSA and The Door Community
  • Ensure proper food presentation and quality of meals
  • Create a positive customer service environment during meal service
  • Uphold proper food safety standards at all times
  • Maintain proper personal hygiene at all times
  • Responsible for inventory and proper storage of foods
  • Responsible for proper clean-up and storage of utensils and small wares
  • Maintain appropriate logs including routing slips
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Serve Safe Certification/Food Handlers License
  • Current Door members in good standing
  • Culinary internship graduate at The Door with great attendance and engagement
  • Must uphold community expectations at all times
  • Attendance and punctuality is a must
  • Advance notice of absences
  • Cell phone, headphones, or tablets are prohibited during work hours

Term: Up to 30hours/week; 6 months
Salary: $15.00 per hour
