Overview:The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 10,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

The Career Advancement Coach for This Way ONward Program will be responsible for planning and facilitating entry and advanced training sessions that will enable participants to understand the opportunities available in retail for both entry-level and long-term employees, develop the skills necessary to succeed in the retail sector, and consider a career in Retail to be a platform for their educational and employment goals.  

Responsibilities:  

  • Conduct initial assessments and work with a caseload of young people to develop and achieve benchmarked individualized educational and career goal plans 
  • Monitor and track participants’ attendance, progress and achievement of career and education goal plans from point of enrollment in EPOCH through post-placement retention 
  • Provide case management services including information, referrals, assistance in accessing child care, health, mental health, and other support services that will assist participants to achieve career and education goals.  This may include site visits to courts, hospitals, schools, or work sites for mandatory and celebratory events 
  • Facilitate career readiness, professional development, and life skills workshops for participants; ensure participants complete a professional development portfolio 
  • Collect and maintain all participant documentation, case management records, progress notes, and outcomes data as related to EPOCH program goals and contractual obligations  
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team with instructional team, placement staff, and college advisors to ensure participants’ education and career needs, interests, and goals are being met; participate in case conferencing 
  • Participate in recruitment, orientation and intake efforts for Door career and education programming 
  • Conduct prospecting, screening, and enrollment of young people for performance-based contracts 
  • Conduct site visits to employment and internship training sites to provide support, verify employment/attendance, and obtain documentation 
  • Develop a transitional or exit service plan for participants who have successfully completed or are no longer able to participate in career and education services at The Door 
  • Develop and facilitate community meetings and provide coverage and support during program activities, award ceremonies, alumni gatherings, and other special events 
  • Provide feedback to Career and Education Services team regarding young people’s education and placement experiences, challenges, and successes, to help inform the content and structure of program services 
  • Support college level and/or high school interns that will work with each respective team on completing set administrative functions 
  • Participate in relevant departmental, agency, and external agency meetings, trainings, case conferences, workshops and events 
  • Handle any appropriate additional responsibilities and functions as assigned by Supervisor and/or Director 

Qualifications and Requirements:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, education, counseling, public policy, or related field or equivalent work experience 
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in youth development, workforce development, or education fields 
  • Experience with retail sector employment and training strongly preferred 
  • Demonstrated experience developing employer partnerships for internships, training, and/or employment opportunities 
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people 
  • Knowledge of educational/vocational programs for youth, labor market trends and opportunities for youth 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing lesson plans and facilitating classroom lessons and workshops 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to outreach and engage young people in the educational and career development process 
  • Ability to closely collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth 
  • Ability to model work readiness skills and appropriate work place behavior at all times 
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment 
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, Mandarin preferred  

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday – Friday, 35 hours per week

Salary:  Commensurate with experience, plus a generous 1199 union benefits package
