The Door empowers young people to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof.

The Part time Benefits Engagement Specialist will be responsible for working with Door members to assist them in obtaining vital documents, such as birth certificates, ID’s, Social Security Cards, etc. This position will also connect young people to any and all benefits and entitlement resources for which they may be eligible. Direct services will include (but are not limited to): application assistance and advocacy for applying for or maintaining: Public Assistance, food stamps, medical insurance, any relevant housing subsidies. The Part Time Benefits specialist will work with the Benefits Engagement Specialist, interns, and other staff as needed to coordinate services.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Perform outreach, intake, assessment, and develop short term plans for obtaining relevant benefits
  • Assist young people and their families in accessing public benefits through virtual support with online applications, on -site support at various sites across NYC (where and when applicable)
  • Provide advocacy, information and referrals concerning health, housing, public entitlements, and other systems/services
  • Assist participants in the development and use of personal and community resources
  • Utilize support from other benefits staff to maintain up-to date information about benefits programs
  • Document all services provided to clients in writing; keep client files up to date, and provide regular statistical reporting on outcomes
  • Establish rapport with young people based on consistency and conversation
  • Ensure youth receive referrals to appropriate Door programs as well as to other community resources
  • Maintain all agency reporting requirements
  • Report all program activities and changes directly to the supervisor
  • Participate in agency-wide and department staff meetings monthly, as well as all scheduled team meetings
  • Attend professional development trainings and workshops
  • Participate in agency-wide initiatives as required by supervisor
  • Complete any additional, relevant responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor

What We Are Looking For:

  • You have a High School Diploma or HSE, Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
  • You have a knack for engaging youth and the ability to apply positive youth development practices.
  • You have the ability to provide crisis management and crisis intervention
  • You are experienced in working with street-involved youth
  • You have a commitment to professionalism and ability to serve as a staff representative of The Door
  • You have an understanding of adolescent development, assessment, counseling and/or crisis management
  • You have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • You have the ability to work effectively and creatively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • You are proficient in Spanish, French, or Mandarin

Hours: 15 hours per week (afternoon and evening hours, may include some weekends)
Salary: $25 per hour
