Overview: The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

The goal of The Door’s Career and Education Services Department is to support young people in completing secondary education and successfully transitioning into post-secondary education and employment.  Programs within the Career and Education Services Department (CareerED) are designed to help both in-school and out-of-school youth to set and attain their educational and career goals. CareerED services allow a young person to craft a personalized life plan defining the steps he/she will take to achieve those goals while developing the necessary skills for future life success and independence. A cornerstone of the Door’s career and education services is the EPOCH program, which aims to prepare out-of-school and out-of-work young people for meaningful placements in college and/or employment through the provision of comprehensive education and career services, which develop potential for economic self-sufficiency.

The Sector Training Coordinator will develop, market, implement and facilitate advance training programs to increase the skills and productivity of current and future participants with the workforce; based on participant needs and industry growth trends. The coordinator will ensure participants understand and explore the opportunities available within various fields (including but not limited to the retail and culinary industries). This position will cultivate new, strategic opportunities for collaboration and partnership with entities that support the Door’s mission and long with the Career & Education Department objectives.

 Responsibilities:

  • Develop customized trainings to meet specific employer hiring and advancement needs
  • Conduct research and industry needs analysis to determine training and development that for advanced level positions that are held by our participants
  • Facilitate industry trainings using a combination of formal class training, group activities, contextualized and experiential learning, discussions and role-plays
  • Facilitate entry level training to prepare young people to enter This Way Ahead Boot Camp and internships
  • Conduct recruitment, prospecting, screening, and enrollment of young people for performance-based contracts
  • Provide coaching and mentoring services that will assist participants to achieve career and education goals
  • Create individualized career and educational plans with participants, including tools, resources and guides to assist with reaching goals
  • Recruit, develop and maintain relationships with employers, businesses and industry representatives with hiring needs suited to skills, interests, and abilities of Door Career and Education participants; identify and gain access to hiring personnel
  • Conduct regular follow-up with employers who have hired participants and report results to appropriate staff
  • Liaise with sector based employers to identify guest speakers, arrange site visits, and determine other opportunities to provide real-world experiences to participants
  • Create and refine curriculum and lesson plans based on employer feedback and market demand
  • Coordinate with career advancement coaches weekly to discuss program activities and participant progress in individual advising sessions
  • Work closely with Assistant Director and management team to pull data and report performance as needed for existing and intended program funders
  • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team to increase our services to youth and to continually make adjustments to provide the appropriate individualized program plans for each young person
  • Collect and maintain all EPOCH program documentation and case records pursuant to data management procedures and contractual obligations
  • Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops and outside events as needed
  • Handle any appropriate responsibilities and functions as assigned by Supervisor

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, education, counseling, public policy, or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in youth development, workforce development, or education fields
  • Experience with retail sector employment and training strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience developing employer partnerships for internships, training, and/or employment opportunities
  • Knowledge of educational/vocational programs for youth, labor market trends and opportunities for youth
  • Demonstrated experience in developing lesson plans and facilitating classroom lessons and workshops
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to outreach and engage young people in the educational and career development process
  • Ability to closely collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth
  • Ability to model work readiness skills and appropriate work place behavior at all times
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Knowledgeable of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Mandarin, or French, preferred

Hours:                  Monday through Friday, 35 hours per week, occasional evening and weekend hours as needed

Salary:                  High 40s to 50K
