Overview: The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 10,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

The goal of The Door’s Career and Education Services Department is to support young people in completing secondary education and successfully transitioning into post-secondary education and employment. Programs within the Career and Education Services Department (CareerED) are designed to help both in-school and out-of-school youth to set and attain their educational and career goals. CareerED services allow a young person to craft a personalized life plan defining the steps he/she will take to achieve those goals while developing the necessary skills for future life success and independence. A cornerstone of the Door’s career and education services is the EPOCH program, which aims to prepare out-of-school and out-of-work young people for meaningful placements in college and/or employment through the provision of comprehensive education and career services, which develop potential for economic self-sufficiency.

The Work Readiness/Credential Instructor will develop and facilitate career exploration and work readiness workshops and credential instruction for Advance and Earn pre-HSE and HSE students as well as sector-focused work readiness and professional development workshops for students in occupational skills training. The Work Readiness/Credential Instructor will provide training in credentials such as Microsoft Office Certification, the National Retail Federation Credential, ServSafe and other industry-recognized credentials and facilitate career readiness and professional development workshops that will prepare students to enter occupational skills training, internships and employment. The Instructor will ensure participants understand and explore the opportunities available within the high demand career pathways in New York City. In this capacity, the Work Readiness/Credential Instructor will work closely with Academic Instructors, Career Advancement Coaches, Job Placement Specialists, and College Advisors to ensure young people are meeting their career and education goals.


  • Develop and facilitate career exploration, work readiness and professional development workshops using a combination of formal class training, group activities, contextualized and experiential learning, discussions and role-plays for Pre-HSE and HSE students
  • Facilitate credential trainings in areas such as such as Microsoft Office Certification, the National Retail Federation Credential, and ServSafe for Advance and Earn participants
  • Develop and facilitate contextualized sector-based career readiness and professional development workshops for Advance and Earn participants in occupational training
  • Work with Advance and Earn participants to create individualized Career Readiness portfolios based on their goals and interests
  • Recruit, develop and maintain relationships with employers, businesses and industry representatives with hiring needs suited to skills, interests, and abilities of Advance and Earn participants to identify guest speakers, arrange site visits, and determine other opportunities to provide real-world experiences to participants
  • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team to increase our services to youth and to continually make adjustments to provide the appropriate individualized program plans for each young person
  • Collect and maintain all Advance and Earn program documentation and case records pursuant to data management procedures and contractual obligations
  • Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops and outside events as needed
  • Handle any appropriate responsibilities and functions as assigned by Supervisor


  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, education, counseling, public policy, or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in youth development, workforce development, or education fields
  • Knowledgeable of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
  • Demonstrated context experience in credential training
  • Demonstrated experience developing employer partnerships for internships, training, and/or employment opportunities
  • Knowledge of educational/vocational programs for youth, labor market trends and opportunities for youth
  • Demonstrated experience in developing lesson plans and facilitating classroom lessons and workshops
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to outreach and engage young people in the educational and career development process
  • Ability to closely collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth
  • Ability to model work readiness skills and appropriate work place behavior at all times
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Mandarin, or French, preferred

Hours: Monday through Friday, 35 hours per week, occasional evening and weekend hours as needed

Salary: Mid 40s, plus generous benefits package
