Recap: The Door and Broome Street Academy Annual Fundraiser

Highlights from our annual fall fundraiser event, featuring emcee Hill Harper, Change Maker awardee Mara Brock Akil, performances by award-winning vocalist Frenchie Davis and The Door youth artists as well as MOVE NYC, and remarks by CEO Kelsey Louie, past Door member and current staffer Kristopher King, and current Door member Brainy Nunez. Video music by Door member Sonny Ryan.

It was an incredible night at our annual fundraiser! Moving remarks were given by our honoree, award-winning TV writer, producer, and director Mara Brock Akil, who received the Change Maker Award. She encouraged us all to remember the doors we have walked through and the people who may have opened those doors for us.

"The Door and Broome Street Academy are doing the incredibly challenging yet powerful work of empowering young people," said Akil. "The organization's unwavering commitment to nurturing the talents, skills and dreams of the next generation is an effort I celebrate and value."

Kelsey Louie, Chief Executive Officer of The Door and Broome Street Academy (BSA), spoke about our ongoing commitment to facing the youth mental health crisis head on through expansions, policy change, and advocacy:

"Since 1972, The Door has supported and empowered many young people on their journey toward success and breaking cycles of crisis by providing shelter and a comprehensive set of services," said Louie. "This important event not only celebrates The Door's incredible work helping change the lives of many young New Yorkers, but it's also a critical moment to gain the financial support we urgently need to strengthen our programming and continue our work. From food insecurity to adolescent health care and housing, young people need community support and equal opportunity to thrive and grow."

"The 'Hear Our Story' fundraiser provides a crucial opportunity for us to expand the number of young people we serve, as well as strengthen our suite of programming to achieve our mission of empowering as many young people as we can to reach their potential."

We also heard from former youth member and current Door staffer Kristopher King and Door Member Brainy, who both shared about the life-changing impact The Door care model has had on their lives, reminding us of why The Door and BSA communities invest in the futures of our young people.

And, not to mention the heart-warming performance given by award-winning vocalist Frenchie Davis with musical artists from The Door's Arts Program Hallie Honore, Nala Baby, and Elle Prado.

Thank you to Hill Harper for amazing emceeing and Chuck Nice for facilitating a successful paddle-raising.

To date, our fundraiser, Hear Our Story, has raised nearly $1.2 million. This funding will directly impact the ongoing stories of thousands of young people–thank you for making their next chapter possible. If you were unable to attend or have yet to donate, you can still show your support here.
