The Door and Broome Street Academy Charter High School are proud and excited to be honoring visionary storyteller Mara Brock Akil at our Fall Gala on October 18, 2023, for her transformative work, particularly her efforts to create inclusive, welcoming spaces where people can be their full selves, be nourished through a sense of belonging and community, and find their voices.

An award-winning writer, showrunner, producer, and director, Mara Brock Akil is a renowned leader in the television industry, the founder of story27 Productions, and the creative force behind groundbreaking TV series like Girlfriends, The Game, and the forthcoming adaptation of Judy Blume’s classic novel Forever.

Brock Akil’s founding of The Writers’ Colony in Los Angeles merges her dedication to the craft of storytelling with her passion for elevating burgeoning creative voices. This initiative is the culmination of two years of personal investment into creating a process-driven, community-based environment to nurture and guide promising writers. In providing literal and figurative space for creative minds to find inspiration and explore their own imaginations, The Writers’ Colony is the living embodiment of Brock Akil’s devotion to “uplifting as she rises,” a shared belief and value that aligns with our own mission to empower the potential of all young people.
